STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Volunteer
Location - Stoke-on-Trent Hours - No fixed hours/flexible Vintage Volunteers is an exciting new volunteering project dedicated to people aged 60 in Stoke on Trent and Newcastle under Lyme. The Vintage Volunteers team are looking for individuals aged 60 and above with a background in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals. By sharing their skills, real life experience and knowledge, STEM Volunteers can enhance young people's understanding of the subject matter and encourage further study and careers in STEM. The transition from working to retirement can be hard for some people, as many of their social connections and sense of purpose can disappear virtually overnight, resulting in feelings of loneliness and isolation. Our aim is to enrich the confidence and knowledge of learners, provide a platform for volunteers to apply their skills and expertise, and combat the negative perception of ageing and the elderly. An initial 3-month pilot, launching in September, will focus on 2 cohorts of school learners (11-16 GCSE and 16-18 BTEC/A level) and see volunteers working collaboratively with teaching staff to enhance the existing curriculum. We will use the pilot to identify the most effective way to incorporate skilled volunteers in an educational setting. Whether retired or still in employment, STEM Volunteers will casually assist teaching staff by utilising their skills and real-life experience to engage with, and inspire young people in STEM. Volunteers can participate in activities such as: - 1-2-1 classroom support for learners or small groups of learners - Delivery of classroom tutorials/presentations on specialist areas of STEM using real-life experience - Show-and-Tell style demonstrations - Off site visits to STEM locations and places of interest - Support and/or design of projects to enhance curriculum requirements - 3rd party oversight/invigilation of learner portfolios and project work - Providing support at events and forums e.g. open evenings and university visits To become a STEM volunteer, we would ask that you have experience in one of the following fields - science, technology, engineering or maths. Other desirable skills include: - Ability to apply skills and real-life experience to engage with young people - Good listening and communication skills - Reliability and flexibility - A non-judgemental and empathetic attitude Any expenses incurred by a volunteer because of their volunteering will be reimbursed in accordance with our expenses policy. Given our commitment to diversity, we actively promote volunteering and recruit potential volunteers using a variety of media and means. We will interview all prospective volunteers and successful candidates will be required to complete a DBS application - paid for by VAST. Volunteers will also receive an induction to introduce them to their role, the project and the teaching staff they'll be supporting. Please note, we reserve the right to close or extend this position depending on application numbers. Therefore, we would urge you to apply as early as possible. Vintage Volunteers is a project of registered charity VAST.
